The need for us to be passionate enough is the second of our seven characteristics/imperatives/goals of the Climate Movement.
Given the enormity of the challenge, the plethora of Olympian Fields of Action, the strength of commitment required, the desires and demands of justice, the need to stay the course for decades to come, without sufficient passion we simply won’t make it.
With passion comes hope, because passion produces action, and action brings hope. To make the impossible possible and the possible actual and the actual beautiful and our future come faster, we must have passion.
The expression of passion will look different for each person, as it does with athletes. It is not synonymous with dramatic displays of powerful feelings. For some, such expressions are natural. Good! But for others, not so much. Also good!
The passion within is the important thing, not how it looks when expressed. At the same time, we cannot keep our passion within bottled up. To play our part most fully and vigorously we must not be afraid to fuel the fires of climate action with our passion.
For many, passion is organic, not linear; it can be messy and feel messy; it does not always follow straight lines or color between the lines. For these reasons some may not like it or feel comfortable with it.
Yet without passion climate action won’t become what it needs to be: a defining cause of our lives, something we fight for even at personal cost and risk. Passion must drive us to give ourselves to something greater, something worthy of the sacrifices we make. Passion must awaken within us and bring forth who we really are. It fires our creativity and propels us into lives that are meaningful.
Passion pushes us to changes our ways, to do what it takes, to join the struggle, to fight for what’s right, to find our Olympian Fields of Action and make our unique contribution to victory.
However, passion that burns bright can burn out before we fulfill our purpose. As I will discuss in our next post, our passion must be sustained by something deeper, its ultimate source.
So we must be big and broad and active enough, we must be passionate enough, and we must be deep enough. Join us!
