Then join us! Join the Climate Movement! Take the Climate Movement Promise
No one is in charge of the Climate Movement. No one has the authority to say who is in and who’s not. So it’s up to us as individuals to say whether we’re in or not.
Joining the Climate Movement: It’s up to you
It’s up to you.
You can affirm your commitment to join the Climate Movement by making the following promise.
The Climate Movement Promise:
To all I hold dear I make a sustained commitment to collective action over time to overcome climate change.
(For those who already are a part of the Climate Movement, if you are willing please also make the Climate Movement Promise!)
What does all of this mean? Let me break it down for you.
“To all I hold dear” — What this means is up to you. This can be your loved ones, your friends, your neighbors, those in the communities you are a part of such as your local community and/or your faith community, your country, the Climate Movement, the human family, life on Earth, and God or whatever you consider greater than yourself. All you hold dear is whoever and whatever you care about.
“A sustained commitment” — This means you won’t be a fair-weather Climate Movement Member. As far as you are able, you will be consistent in your commitment.
“Collective action” — You recognize and affirm that the only way we are going to get this done is through people coming together to take action. How you fulfill this is up to you.
“Over time” — This is not a one-shot deal. We are not a one-and-done effort. The Climate Movement is in it for the long haul. Our collective efforts will take years, decades. You may have to take a break or even go dormant for awhile. But henceforth you will always be a part of the Climate Movement.
“Overcome climate change1” — Climate impacts have created harmful consequences and suffering. Our efforts won’t make that suffering disappear. The word overcome is an intentional echo of the Civil Rights Movement in the United States, where “We Shall Overcome,” a labor movement folk song derived from spirituals, became an anthem of the cause. Spirituals were born in suffering, but they recognize that suffering does not have the final word. The use of this anthem recognizes that great loss, great suffering has occurred, but “We shall overcome.”
To overcome the injustice in climate change we must do the three actions of justice: stop bad stuff (like climate pollution), set wrong right, and make things better. We cannot undue the bad consequences of the past or stop what is already baked in to the present and the future. But we can do the three actions of justice and prevent really bad consequences as we create a better world.
Making the Climate Movement Promise
I encourage you to make the Climate Movement Promise. How, exactly?
You can say it right now privately in your heart. You can say the words to yourself out loud if you like.
It is best if you make this promise public, either by saying it again or informing others that you have taken it. You could do so in person to family, friends, or groups you belong to. You could share it on Social Media. You could make a Comment here saying you’ve done so. You could do all of these things — and others I haven’t thought of!
Please let us know that you’ve taken the Climate Movement Promise by filling out this form.
Find Your Group
I would strongly encourage you to join a group or social entity that can support you in keeping your Climate Movement Promise. You can belong to more than one. If one doesn’t exist to fit your needs and gifts, you can help form your own, what I call a Climate Action Team.
Grow the Movement
There are many ways and places to serve our cause, what I call our Olympian Fields of Action. One Field of Action upon which we all participate is growing and improving the Climate Movement. So I encourage you to share this post and the Climate Movement Promise with others and help them join our worldwide Team.
Climate Hope Together
Together we are the hope we’ve been waiting for. Hope is in our hands; hope is in our hearts. Hope shared is exponential. Our hope together will create a better, more beautiful world. Join us!
If you are new here, check out the Introductory Series. Please help grow our cause by sharing this post and the Climate Movement Promise. And thanks for all you’re doing.
